Agnes Denes
Agnes Denes is a Hungarian born American conceptual artist based in New York. She is known for works in a wide range of media - from poetry and philosophy writings, to complex hand and computer rendered diagrams, sculpture and international environmental installations.
In Denes' work you can see that the environment plays a big part. In these photographs you can see that she has the New York landscape in the background and a wheat field in the foreground. To me, this shows how things have changed environmentally. The landscape in the background signifies large companies, a large population, etc, and the corn field reminds the reader that there are workers providing for these large cities and that areas of land are being taken over by new buildings for population. So therefore farmers are out of work and food supply goes down. Denes shows either a landscape or significant landmark in the background of these images. I think this is powerful because it reminds the viewer of the sources of our food and how new buildings destroying land is destroying the source slowly.
